Hear it from the Rat’s mouth

“From day one, Maddy has been much more than a fitness coach to me. Right off the bat, Maddy showed her investment in me as a client by redefining what it means to be a coach. Rather than focusing merely on pushing numbers, Maddy and I have worked together to create real, sustainable change. In fact, one of my favorite aspects of the RAT training philosophy is the holistic focus. Maddy’s thorough coaching style has helped to support me becoming my best both physically and mentally. When communicating with Maddy, there is no sense of superiority; rather our coach-client relationship is built on a foundation of mutual respect. And where do I start when it comes to the RAT community? The quality of Maddy and Will’s coaching is best reflected by the clients they attract. Truly, the RAT community has helped me find my home in Flagstaff.”

“I can confidently say that joining R.A.T. Liftz has been one of the best decisions I have ever made! There is a popular mentality in the gym, the “I can reach my fitness goals on my own, I don’t need a coach!” mentality. Being coached by Maddy has shown me how negative that mentality is, my strength when I was training on my own is nowhere near where it is now! Not only has my strength improved, I have gained so much confidence, I am properly fueling myself, and I have been connected with an amazing community along the way. Maddy and Will go above and beyond for their clients, I couldn’t be happier!”

“Working with the R.A.T. Liftz team was an awesome experience, initially interested 6 months of coaching and programming, I was given all the tools and help/guidance I needed to freely use my home gym more effectively and creatively. My odd work schedule has me home where I workout from a garage gym for 3 weeks, and then away for 3-5 weeks at a time working out of a hotel gym or sometimes just my hotel room. Will regularly and quickly adapted to my fluid schedule and programmed workouts QUICK (like with less than 24 hours’ notice quick). Not only was it quick but Will came up with new and inventive ways to keep my momentum while on the road. The R.A.T. Liftz team helped me integrate more biomechanically sound movements, warm ups, and focus into my workout routines and movements that had otherwise dried up previously to working with him! Not only did Will and the R.A.T. Liftz team help support and nurture an amazing group of liked minded individuals, but also went the extra mile to ensure that I was taken care of, regardless of the program I signed up for. Will went above and beyond to check in with me not just physically and progressively for the programing he was assigning, but also check in mentally when a skipped workout or low weight was not a normal occurrence, and he regularly checked in on me to ensure things were okay. Working with the R.A.T. liftz team has really helped me step up my game and creativity in the gym at home and it has otherwise changed how I view fitness and exercise as an enjoyable act, not just a bothersome chore!”

“I’ve been in the R.A.T.Z family for almost 9 months now, and I really can’t believe how greatly this has impacted my life. I started on January weighing 199lbs, the most I’ve ever been. Mind you, when I was 21, I was 130-140lbs only (5’9” too!), and having this much weight made me feel sick, and I was in a really bad place at the moment. I’m almost back on my original weight (199lbs) but looking WAY better and stronger. These 8-9 months have been life changing. From body transformations to a new outlook on life. I wanna thank William and Madeline for their amazing support in these few months, you guys push me to be better and do better, even when I don’t do it right. It’s been one of, if not of the best journey I’ve had in my life to achieve being better and feeling better!”

“Will and Maddy were my first lifting coaches I have ever had. At first, I was a little nervous about the commitment level in fear of disappointing not only them but myself, but then after we sat down and discussed how they approach coaching, it was the easiest decision I have ever made. The attention to detail that Will brought both in the gym and through our online coaching program is unmatched. I immediately saw results in not only the mechanics of my lifts but my overall health and appearance as well.
In just a few months I hit PR's I couldn't dream of in the past 10 years of casual lifting while being backed by a one-of-a-kind community that Will and Maddy have created. The daily reminder to pay attention to my body and the weekly check ups to see how little changes are affecting my overall health CHANGED MY LIFE. After moving across the country, I see first hand how special their program is and I don't think anyone should pass up the benefits that they have to offer when it comes to lifting, mental health, and nutrition. They are the coolest and sexiest humans I know and I will forever be changed by the experience of having Will as my coach.”

“I’ve been training with Will as my coach since around December of 2022. Before that, I had been doing my own thing in the gym, no programming or specific goals in mind other than to get big. I didn’t track my progress, didn’t track my macros or nutrition, and found myself stagnant. I found myself spending months going to the gym doing the exact same thing, and never getting any stronger. In the months leading up to taking on Will as my coach, my gym sessions would get progressively worse. I just couldn’t understand why I dedicated so much time and energy to going to the gym only to get seemingly weaker each week. I thought I had some idea of what was going on, but it turns out I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Starting a program with a coach was tough. The hardest part wasn’t the weight, it was the ego. Its really difficult to be told you’re working weight for bench is maybe 60-70% of what you’re used to lifting. It can be frustrating to feel like you’re performing nearly the perfect rep, only for your form to be picked apart and told you’re not moving optimally. Its even harder to make the changes your coach gives you, performing the exact same exercise in a manner that you aren’t used to. For example, your coach fixes your squat, and now that “fix” makes 135 move like shit. “This isn’t working” you’ll think to yourself, “I feel weaker now than when I started.” The first couple months are the hardest. Out of every top single, RPE 9, 3x1, repetition I’ve performed, the hardest ones were those first few weeks of coaching.
At almost a year of coaching, I can say with 100% certainty that all those shitty reps, all that frustration, and all those hits to my pride were worth it. I have back problems from my time in the Army. Before coaching with will, I couldn’t squat more than 225 without a belt on, and even then I’d still have back pain. My old max squat was an ugly 275. Today, I can squat that for reps without a belt and with no pain because of the time and effort Will put into correcting my form and holding me accountable. All of my “big 3” max lifts prior to coaching have become working weights. When I started coaching with will, I weighed about 195 pounds; these days, I average around 207. Tracking my macros (and having a coach always in my ear asking if I hit my protein goal) has tremendously helped my lifts. When I competed in my first powerlifting meet, my squat max was a 72 pound increase to my pre-coaching max, less than a year prior. While much of that can be attributed to nutrition, I attribute most of that to Will helping me find a squat form that helped me move weight as optimally as possible. Over the last year, I’ve smashed all of my previous maxes. I’ve lifted weights to competition standard on stage that, without coaching, would likely have never even been gym PR’s. I’m glad I stuck through those first few months. It was a lot of work, but I trusted the process and stuck to the guidance that Will gave me, and I’m stronger now than I ever thought would be possible. Plain and simple, the process WORKS. I don’t have the words to adequately explain how much I recommend Will Ernster as a coach. My strength and confidence in the gym are miles ahead of where they were before I started coaching. Plus, the dude’s built like a brick shit-house so you know he knows what he’s talking about. I can’t wait to see where we go from here, and where I’ll be with my lifts a year from now. Even if someday I decide to take a break from being coached, I will always have the knowledge and experience I’ve gained, and continue to gain, for as long as I continue to lift.”

“Hello! My name is Diego Dominguez and I have been a consistent member of Will and Maddy’s R.A.T. Liftz training system for about a year at this point and I have nothing but great things to say about their support, guidance, and overall knowledge on the insurmountably intimidating sport that is powerlifting. Before I met Will, I was a recreational “Gym-goer” who struggled to find identity within themselves. I would go in do 3 sets of 10 of whatever and hop on a cardio machine for 30 minutes and get out, this lead to a dread of the gym. After meeting Will, I was introduced to the sport of powerlifting and from there on I was in love! Will truly and wholeheartedly gave me the full spectrum of just how wonderful going to the gym could be! I would recommend R.A.T. Liftz to anyone, from a newbie in the gym to a seasoned lifter, I have no doubts in my mind Ernie (Will) and Madz have something for you!”
Hannah has been with us for over a year now and has made tremendous progress. She is a full time EMT in Flagstaff, so she has no shortage of obstacles to reaching her goals, but she doesn’t let that stop her. She has changed the way she views food, training, and fitness in general. Once upon a time she was doing hours of cardio and eat 1,200 calories daily, and she soon realized that wasn’t getting her to the body of her dreams. Now, she eats over 2,000 calories/day, lifts heavy AF, and is focused on feeling better from the inside out. 🤍 Hannah also just started PARAMEDIC school and is competing in her first powerlifting meet in December 2023!
Steven was with us through his first powerlifting meet in November 2022, where he was able to add 18lbs to his squat and 40lbs to his deadlift! He is now doing his own programming and still getting stronger. He has since added ANOTHER 10lbs to his squat, performing a beautiful 455lbs in mid 2023. Be like Steven; learn, grow, and then apply it for yourself 😉
The prodigy, Diego! He is coming up on a year with the RATS and just competed in his first powerlifting meet in September where he added over 100lbs to his total! He is a very busy young lad, with work, school, and an internship, yet he still makes time to hit the weights AND make progress. Diego is the personification of one of our core values: RESILIENCE. Be like Diego; don’t let anything stop you from reaching your goals 😎
