Social Comparison Is Robbing You Of Your Health
“Comparison is the thief of joy.” - Theodore Roosevelt
Not only does it rob us of our joy, but in the day of social media, fitness influencers, and over-information, it also robs us of our health.
Ask yourself how many times you have recommitted yourself to some sort of training routine, only to stop or repeatedly change it as a result of what you see other people doing?
You see someone doing “more” or “better” than you. Someone points out flaws in your training method. Someone explains why their style of training is superior to all others.
No matter where you look, there is a reason that what you're doing is wrong, suboptimal, or lame.
Every time you get derailed, you feel shame for changing things, for not “knowing better”, and for allowing yourself to be influenced - yet again - by someone who knows absolutely nothing about you.
You are determined to educate yourself, consume more content, and finally formulate the training plan that is impervious to comparison. It works for a while, and somehow you find yourself repeating the cycle.
The truth is that there is no one style of training, no set of exercises, no training schedule, that is perfect.
What does matter, is adherence to the timeless and basic principles that drive the adaptations you seek. Consistency, quality, intensity, recovery, and perhaps most importantly, enjoyment.
Stop allowing new information to constantly alter how you operate. You cannot achieve a desired outcome if the process never remains consistent for more than a few weeks.
Stick to the basics, trust your intuition, and pay attention to how your body responds over time.
